Music. What’s it for?

I’ve often said that the thing that attracts me most to music is that we don’t appear to need it at all. It seems that most of what occupies the human race is related to survival. Clothes to keep warm, food to grow, construction for shelter etc. Hypothetically, music couldĀ be removed and nobody would die. Of course the essence of music is communication, and without that we’d fail as a species, but why then are we so obsessed with a type of communication which is seemingly inessential? I love the fact that this question doesn’t need an answer, just as the music we listen to shouldn’t need an explanation.
